First and foremost, wow, they have done a great job at this park. I never knew there was so much to see. Casey had a ball, she even made a new friend.
Don't you envy how they can fall asleep anywhere, anytime? Casey has actually fallen asleep while I've petted her head, all of a sudden there is dead weight in my hand. The bad thing is she snores like a freight train and well she farts, she is part lab, what can I say...
Super easy and healthy.

I use a cheap plastic ice cube trays, but you can make these larger or smaller depending on the size of your dog. The great thing is that they are thick enough that you can make them free-form on a cookie sheet if you like. Just remember the more liquid you use, the harder the treat will be and then the dogs tend to swallow them whole instead of chewing them up.

I use a food processor, but you can use a blender or just make in a bowl. You don't need to measure, but I will use them for reference.

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree
1/2 cups shredded carrots or apples without seeds or core
Add pure no sugar added apple juice to make it thin enough

I blend this all together, put in a plastic zip bag, cut the tip and squeeze into the ice cube tray and freeze. I take the extra and freeze in a baggie for future pops. Saves time and I'm all about that!

My husband was prepared for a bloodbath. I know I was NOT prepared for what happened.

Nothing happened.....I mean really, nothing happened. Casey was like the shy wallflower at a school dance. Every time she went up to another dog, they sniffed her, decided she doesn't eat anything worthwhile and moved on.

She spent most the day wondering around looking for a friend. As her mommy, I felt so bad, I kept pushing her over to groups of other dogs and as soon as she got there, they dispersed. UGGGHHH, the other dogs don't like our baby!! How could that be??!!?? Don't they see how cute she is, how special she is?
My husband has some strict rules, dogs belong outside, they can't get on the
furniture, no barking, no jumping, etc. Well, as in many households, what man
says is not necessarily what man gets.

Case in point, our bed. Note animal blanket, note animal on blanket, note me not there since animal aka Casey has taken over. I leave for a minute and she gets all snuggly up against my pillow, TV remote close by.

As for my husband, the guy with the rules, well he is right next to her, probably sound asleep!

The girls were well behaved, even though each dog had 1-2 human guards at all times. I think only one growl escaped and they didn't play too rough so the house is intact.

Definately going to have to keep this going, we are all sure they will be the best of buds soon. They even managed to allow us a holiday photo shot of them in the same room. Aren't they just the cutiest!!
This will be the first time Casey & Maylene will be locked in the house together with no where for anyone to run. Merry Christmas everyone!

Her two favorite shows are America's Funniest Video's and Animal Cops. Put on one of those and you have "instant babysitter." It's great for those days when we just don't have the energy to keep her entertained or when the weather is bad. I figure she isn't college-bound anyway, so I'm not feeling guilty about our parenting methods... ;-)
Her social skills have been a bit hit or miss and that is mostly our fault for not socializing her properly. Lately we have been trying to get her introduced to more people and more dogs. So far we have been pretty lucky. Well, except for the peanut butter incident......

Casey, like all dogs, loves food. She was a bit food aggressive when we first brought her home, but again, my fault. Never give a ham bone to a dog that has been on the streets and came from the pound. Let me rephrase that, don't give and then try to TAKE a ham bone in this situation. We got through that and after a year I thought all was good.

Casey has a "cousin" of sorts, Maylene.... Maylene has been coming over to swim and play with Casey. The first time went great, they played like crazy and had so much fun. The second time....not so good. Both were in the pool and then after they got out for a bit, I had this great brainstorm to give them each a frozen peanut butter treat I had made. The food aggression came back, so bad that I had to pick Casey up and haul her off to her crate.

Poor Maylene (who is twice her size) seemed scared to death... After a bit I let Casey out and she really seemed sorry and wanted to play. After a bit they made up and had a blast, but have to say it was pretty spooky for a moment there. No one was sure what would or could happen next. As you can see however, they look to be best of buds now, or so it seems....no one but those two really know what was being said....
Who knows, all I can say is Casey does the craziest things with her back legs. She loves to curl her back "toes" up like a baby and she always has her legs spread out like a frog about to leap.

When she was younger, she would naw on her back leg, like a pacifier or something. She never broke the skin, but man she would chew and chew it. I'm glad she doesn't do this much anymore, it made me laugh, but it also freaked me out a little.

This pose however, can last, I just laugh like crazy when I see her.....you have to admit, it is cute!
Do you have a dog like that? We never know quite what to expect from her. Once moment she is the sweetest little girl ever and then she does something you just didn't expect. My husband lovingly calls her NutCase.

One of the things she just loves to do is jump straight up into the air, like a living pogo stick. She actually bounces like she is spring-loaded, which is one of my pet names for her.

Another one of her favorite things is to stick her cold (very cold) wet (very wet) nose everywhere. Bare skin is her preference, as well as other places a dogs nose just does not belong!! Outside, any hole in the ground is a target for that nose. The other day it came out of some hole sneezing for minutes, one day I'm afraid her nose just won't be on her face anymore. Our crazy little bundle of fur, we just can't get enough of her. She keeps us laughing and that in itself is worth all the craziness!

Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05446069799225116276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22630728577683486.post-4285378564055239402012-02-16T13:00:00.000-08:002012-02-16T13:00:56.870-08:00Here comes the airplane.Casey no longer likes her breakfast. She used to sit next to me, looking up lovingly while I prepared her morning meal. Now she hides behind me like a toddler afraid of what might be lurking in the bowl.

Nothing has changed, just one day she decided that she would rather chew a bully stick than have dogfood. I have created a bully monster...and now I'm paying the price.

It sit on the floor next to her bowl, like the fool I am. Offering up a bit of kibble or sardine to coax her closer to the dish. She just burys her nose in my arm. Maybe she just decided she doesn't like the bit of sardine after-all. Maybe it's because it was Jake's favorite and she knows that and wants to be her own dog??!!?? Or maybe, just maybe she is spoiled rotten and knows she has complete control.
Casey has these moments where she just goes round and round in a big circle in the yard. She goes so fast that she is almost parallel to the ground. I think she just needs to burn off her energy, but sometimes when she slows down she looks at you like you are bait.

Being a mixed breed pound dog we really don't know what she is, other than lab. She looks like she has greyhound, she is crazy like a chihuahua and at times has the glare of a mad pit bull. I suppose we could get a DNA test, but that won't change the fact that she is just plain nuts and does the craziest things.

She has another nutzie thing she does after my husband & I finish dinner. I put a handful of kibble in her dish and let her out of her crate. She makes a mad dash for the bowl, grabs a few bits of food and then runs to the door to the backyard. Sometimes I think she actually huffs and stomps her paws when I don't let her out quickly enough. She thens runs to each corner of the yard barking like crazy, as if she is telling everyone something terribly important. Once she has gotten all the dogs in the neighborhood barking along, she runs back to the house and finishes her food. Mission accomplished!!
She will go in and lay-down when she wants quiet time. Many people (as did I) think that crating your dog is cruel. Think of it as their safe place, their bedroom.

You need to make sure when crate training a puppy that you allow them plenty of time outside to go to the bathroom. They can't "hold it" as long as adult dogs. If you crate your adult dog while you are at work, it's a good idea to go home at lunch-time or arrange someone to be at your home to let your dog out for a break.

In my opinion, crates should be large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. Long enough for them to stretch out when laying down. I like to cover the top and 3 sides to give them a cozy place. Old towels are perfect. We have multiple crates, one in the garage by the doggie door, this one has a water bowl attached. We have another in the family room and lastly one in a spare bedroom for when we put her to bed for the night.

Crates are also a good way to keep you dog from being under-foot when you are trying to clean or have company over. It's also a good time-out place for the younger ones that get the crazies now and then! Very important though, do not leave your dog in a crate with a bully stick or toy that they can choke on unless you are in the same room and can monitor them.
Not that there haven't been many, she is one crazy dog! We figure we have about one more year of insane puppy/teenager antics, but I hope not all of her personality "grows up."

She has started chewing blankets, her bed, socks....soft stuff again. She pretty much stopped that when we introduced the bully stick, which she is now addicted to. That and the Checkups dental chews and the Kirkland dental chews and.....well you get the point. Not sure why she wants to take on the soft stuff, maybe it's just a comfort thing.

Now she doesn't want to eat her breakfast, not that she is full, more that she is like a child that doesn't want lima beans. I have to insist that she eats her dog food before she gets any treats and it is a battle. Casy is one stubborn dog, the DIVA of all DIVA's!!
When the vet told us that Jake's liver was failing, I felt so helpless. My thoughts went to everything we ever gave him, all the allergy shots, the pills, the food, the treats, you name it. Right after we got him from the pound we found out about his disc damage and all we cared about was to give him a happy, pain-free quality life. That came at a price and we knew that the meds would damage his liver at some point, but when it happened it still was a shock.

I immediately went into research mode and read everything I could find about liver disease in dogs. Jake had extreme food allergies in addition to the other health problems, but I was convinced I could cure him with food. It's the European blood in me I guess.....

I started him on a strict regime of milk thistle, Denosyl, Cosequin, burdock root and a powder called Vitamineral Green that I found at the health food store. Because of his allergies, he was on a home-made diet.

I cooked ground turkey and mixed it with steamed (then pureed) butternut squash, green beans, baby carrots and peas. Mixed that with some plain mashed potatoes for a meal twice a day, the goal was to give him immune boosting foods that were easy to digest so that his liver did not have to work at it. I also made a mixture of lightly cooked and pureed peeled potatoes, peeled apples, artichoke hearts (no marinade), broccoli, peas, celery, peeled cucumber, asparagus stalks and banana. I added blueberries and mixed with low-fat cottage cheese for a once-a-day treat. He also got a spoonful of Greek yogurt with a spoonful of cut boiled chicken before bed.

He had to have a lot of mini-meals because of all the prescription meds he was on. You would think with all that food he would have weighed a ton, but he didn't and he sure loved his food. He would watch me cook his meals on the weekends and just start shaking with anticipation, because he always got to have a special treat of the turkey mixture once it cooled. I would devote one weekend a month to cook and mix everything up so I could bag it and put it in the freezer. It was a lot of work, but it made me feel like I was doing something. I kept up the research too, always surfing the web to see what foods helped heal the liver, buying books on the subject, asking other people what they did.

Then one day the vet called, I remember it so clearly, it was a Sunday night, around 9 PM. He just got to look over the latest lab results and couldn't wait until Monday to call. Jakes liver condition improved, by 20%!! He said he never saw that and was so excited to tell us. Needless to say, I had a renewed sense of purpose and energy to keep doing what I was doing.

I think it was the predisone that got him in the end. One day we came home to find him going into shock. The vet said he was bleeding internally so we ended up putting him down. He fought a good fight, always a trooper and always so happy. We gave him a good life and we never regret adopting him for a second. He is still missed.
